Will I Need a Huge Dumpster to Dispose of Concrete?
While it might seem logical that you would require a huge dumpster if you’re dealing with concrete, concrete dumpsters are usually 20 cubic yards or smaller. The reason for this is that concrete is extremely heavy. In fact, 1 cubic yard of concrete weighs about 4,000 lbs. or 2 tons! This extreme weight can pose a problem and risk for our drivers when hauling concrete. There are also regulations mandated by local transportation departments that are in place to insure weight limits are followed to prevent streets, highways or interstates from incurring structural damage.
Tips When Disposing of Concrete Waste
- If you’re renting a dumpster for concrete disposal, make sure to only use it for concrete. This will avoid being charged with additional disposal fees. We call this a “clean load” and it makes it much easier for us to recycle the concrete. In many instances concrete residue can be reused as aggregate in road construction or for other surfacing.
- Don’t overfill your dumpster. As we said above, concrete is extremely heavy. To avoid overage fees don’t overfill your dumpster. When you explain your project, one of our technicians can provide you with guidance on how large a dumpster you’ll require, and how far you should fill it before having it removed. To give you an idea, a 10 cubic yard dumpster filled halfway can weigh as much as 20,000 lbs. or 10 tons.
